Sphene (titanite) exhibits extremely high birefringence, producing vivid interference colors. There are well-formed nepheline crystals that provide an excellent teaching example for distinguishing nepheline from quartz. Apatite inclusions within biotite show radiation damage, evidenced by pleochroic halos.
