BH250-39b

Title

BH250-39b

Subject

Travertine

Description

Major Mineral: calcite, aragonite

BH250-39b is a sample of travertine collected from near Tekeze dam in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia. These deposits are related to tufa dams and carbonate formations that are widespread throughout the Tigray Highlands.

The widespread occurrence of these travertine and tufa deposits suggests that many of them formed during moist climatic intervals in the Late Pleistocene, likely associated with periods of increased rainfall and groundwater flow—particularly before and during the East African Humid Period.

Travertine in this context offers important clues about Pleistocene climate in Tigray. Its deposition aligns with wet episodes, indicating pulses of intensified monsoonal activity and regional hydrological recharge.
