Title

BH250-122wc

Subject

Decorah Shale

Description

BH250-122wc is a sample collected from the Decorah Shale at Wangs Corner, Warsaw Township, Minnesota. This site is a regular destination for both introductory and upper-level geology students, offering a remarkable glimpse into one of the most fossiliferous outcrops in the Midwest. Despite recent access challenges involving the landowner, it remains an invaluable location for studying Upper Ordovician stratigraphy and fossil preservation.

The Decorah Shale directly overlies the Platteville Limestone and consists of fine-grained, greenish-gray shale interbedded with occasional carbonate lenses. The outcrop is rich in articulate brachiopods and bryozoans, disarticulated crinoid, gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods, rugose corals, and trilobites.

Sibo Wang, Class of 2010, conducted her senior comprehensive project at this site. Her research includes detailed documentation of the fossil assemblage and provides a valuable resource for future study.
